  • Beautifully turned from ebony & boxwood.
  • Traditional Staunton design.
  • Superb detail and high-quality finish.
  • 8.9cm king.
  • Each piece is perfectly weighted with broad, felted bases.
  • Ideal for chessboards with larger squares from 53cm.

The 1853 Paulsen Reproduction chessmen have been named after Louis Paulsen (Jan 1833 to August 1891), who during the 1860s and 1870s, was among the top five players in the world. Based on the traditional Staunton design, the pieces are handcrafted from solid ebony and boxwood. The king, standing at 8.9cm tall, along with all the other pieces, is painstakingly carved and finished to perfection. The bases (quite broad for this height) are then covered with billiard cloth so that your chessboard will not be damaged during battle.

To complement these historic pieces, we would recommend looking at boards boards from 53cm with larger squares to accommodate the broader bases. Most of the woods used in these chessboards will complement the ebony and boxwood pieces. However, please feel free to contact our customer service team if you have any concerns or queries.
