    • You might think that a king height of just 7.62 cm is small for a set of luxury chess pieces but the broadness of the bases means that the scale is spot on, the weight and balance being near perfect. These Sovereign series chessmen in ebony and natural boxwood are one of the most elegant and beautiful Staunton chess sets we carry in our stock here at The Regency Chess Company.
    What's particularly special about these chess pieces is there has been no compromise at all in their detail and styling whatsoever. In fact, the size of these chessmen works extremely well with the high level of detail, to the point where they appear more detailed than perhaps they would be if they were larger. To coin a phrase: small is beautiful.

    Expertly crafted by the world's finest producer of wooden chessmen, only clean graded boxwood and ebony are good enough for our luxury pieces. The ebony has been specifically selected for its luxurious jet black look and despite being a natural material, the uniformity of the tone across the set of pieces is superb. These sets are produced by special order in quantities of no more than ten at a time with just one knight carver used for each and every knight. This means that one set of pieces can take an age to create but you can expect all four knights in the set to be virtually identical, despite the fact that they have been carved by human hands. Each set comes numbered and certified as a genuine product of The Regency Chess Company England and represents a great investment. This luxury set includes 4 queens
    The Sovereign Ebony Chess Men are most at home on a 50.8 cm chess board or will squeeze onto an 46cm chess board at a push. For this set, we have selected the 45cm wenge and maple chess board from Rechapados Ferrer. Despite the smaller board being chosen, the dimension of the playing squares on this particular board allow the Sovereigns to look quite comfortable on it. This size of board also tends to be easier to accommodate in the family home - whether its for yourself or a gift for a special occasion.
    Wenge wood gives you that lovely dark chocolatey hue and subtle grain. Maple always contrasts beautifully with the darker woods and the ebony chess men look aesthetically pleasing on this colour combination.
