THE PIECES

In the midst of battle, King Lot is accompanied by his wife, the captivating Lady Morgause, who is both his queen and Arthur's half-sister and the mother of Mordred, fathered by none other than Arthur himself. Mordred, portrayed as a menacing bishop on the chess board, rides a horse draped in the king's colors as his knight, with a turreted castle symbolizing the rook. Completing their army is Melehan, Mordred's son and embodiment of the pawns.

The King Arthur Hand Painted Chess Set features the legendary king himself, adorned in a regal crown and cloak, leading his army with his beautiful queen, Guinevere, by his side in a long, flowing gown. The bishop Merlin, with his long robes, grey beard, and staff, is also part of the set, as well as Passelande, depicted as the knight with the iconic Camelot as the rook. The pawns are represented by the armored Sir Lancelot. The set is presented on a luxurious 15.75 walnut and maple board from Spain. These exquisite chess pieces can be purchased separately, but together they make a perfect gift for any Arthurian or chess enthusiast.

THE HISTORY

Although gathered from various origins, the historical background of King Arthur is limited. He is a renowned leader of British descent, who, as depicted in medieval romances and histories, valiantly defended Britain from Saxon invaders during the late 5th and early 6th centuries AD. His trusty steeds were named Llamrei and Hengroen, known as Passelande in French sources. The tale of Arthur is predominantly woven with folklore, and his existence is a topic of dispute and discourse among modern historians. Guinevere, renowned as the wife of this legendary King, is best remembered for her passionate affair with Lancelot, the chief knight of her husband's court.

The legendary figure of Merlin, known as the wizard in Arthurian history, is a combination of historical and legendary figures, according to Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae (c. 1136). Buried in the Broceliande Forest in Brittany, Merlin is considered a mythical and powerful character. Another key figure in Arthurian legend is Sir Lancelot, a Knight of the Round Table and Arthur's loyal companion. He holds the title of Lord of Joyous Gard and is renowned as the greatest swordsman and jouster of his time. However, his affair with Guinevere ultimately leads to the downfall of Arthur's kingdom, resulting in a civil war.

King Lot of Lothian was not only a ruler but also the king of Orkney and Norway, as some sources suggest. He is portrayed as the husband of Arthur's sister or half-sister, who goes by the names Anna or Morgause. Mordred, infamous for his treachery, was defeated by Arthur in the Battle of Camlann, where both Mordred and Arthur were fatally wounded. Mordred, sadly, was Arthur's illegitimate son from his marriage to Morgause, who was also his half-sister and the wife of King Lot.
