The deep recess in the base is one of the many distinctive design elements that set these chessmen apart. The tapered shanks are a neat change from the usual curves of Staunton chess pieces. In this set, each piece has been perfectly balanced, with just the correct amount of weight in each base to give them the perfect feel during play.

Such quality in the material has allowed for an extremely intricate design. The carving of the knights, for example, is uniform and has been done to an extremely high standard. Their teeth are prominent, resulting in an eccentric, expressive appearance.
