THE CHESS SET

The exquisite detail of these chess pieces is enhanced by the 15.75 inch Spanish walnut and maple board upon which they are placed. Genghis Khan, depicted in all his regal glory, leads the intimidating Mongolian Army, adorned in their traditional attire. The queen exudes elegance in her costume, while the tribesmen wield decorative shields and spears. Unique to Italfama are the creative miniature ger figurines, representing the Mongolian people's tent-like dwellings, serving as the rooks. The Russian chessmen don traditional garb, from the imposing King to the graceful Queen and the Cossack bishop. Even the pawns and knights, wearing chain mail, boast incredible detail. The onion-domed rook is an intricately crafted replica of Russian architecture from that era. The Russians vs Mongolians Hand Painted Chess Set is also available without the board, making it a perfect addition for any history enthusiast.

THE HISTORY

With the guidance of Genghis Khan, generals Jebe and Subotai bravely trekked through the treacherous Caucasus Mountains and into Russia, ultimately conquering the Caucasus in 1221 and a portion of Russia in 1222. Their strategic maneuvers and relentless assaults led to the eventual surrender of Prince Mstislav of Kiev, though he and his men were ultimately betrayed and brutally killed. The Mongolian Army, known as the Golden Horde, ruled over Russia for 250 years, with Old Sarai serving as their central headquarters. However, their reign eventually came to an end with the rise of the Muscovite state and the defeat of Ivan III of Moscow in 1480. Despite their dominance, the conflicts between the Mongolians and Russians left a trail of destruction, decimating cities and populations.
