THE PIECES

Experience the remarkable attention to detail of Italfama with these intricately designed British vs Zulu themed chess pieces! Each piece is beautifully crafted, from Lord Chelmsford and his wife Adria representing the British military to the fierce Zulu King Cetswayo adorned in tribal gowns. The British soldiers, proudly clothed in red and white uniforms, are equipped with pistols or bayonet firearms. The rooks are designed as cannons with the Union Flag waving high above, while the Zulu tribe members are represented with flowing robes, an urn, and a cattle skull. Even the pawns have exquisite shields. The Zulu rooks, designed as dwelling huts, showcase the creative genius of this set. These stunning pieces perfectly complement the 16 inch board and are paired with a beautiful 15.75 inch walnut and maple board from Spain, completing The British vs Zulu chess set.

THE HISTORY

In 1874, the fearless Sir Henry Bartle Frere, took decisive action by issuing an ultimatum to Zulu king Cetshwayo, defying British government approval. This daring move aimed to spark war, ultimately leading to the downfall of Zulu independence through fierce battles and a decisive victory for the British. Inspired by Lord Carnarvon's successful implementation of federation in Canada, it was believed that a similar strategy, uniting political manoeuvring and military campaigns, would bring success to South Africa.
