This superb little chess set features miniature versions of the legendary Isle of Lewis chessmen and a stoneware board and case. The Isle of Lewis chessmen need little introduction as one of the most iconic and famous sets of chess pieces. Discovered on the Isle of Lewis in 1831 after a sandbank collapsed and revealed a chest that contained the chess pieces, they are said to date back to the 12th century and likely to have been crafted in Norway. Indeed some people argue that the pieces should never have been named after the Isle of Lewis as this was not where they were made. Arguments about the original pieces continue to rage, mostly about where in the world they should be exhibited.
The National Museum Scotland has endorsed this lovely little version of the legendary set. Unlike the originals there is no disputing its origin; this set is made in England to a very high standard and represents true value for money. A heavy chess set that's elegant and a timeless classic. Each of the pieces is a true work of art and a very accurate representation of the original. The set is lovingly crafted from a crushed stone resin, is heavy and feels lovely to handle. A superb little chess set that has remained amazingly popular.
