A nation with a rich history of extraordinary growth and change, Scotland has endured many significant changes over time. After the Roman conquest of Britain in the 1st century AD, the famous Hadrian's Wall was built across Northern England in an attempt to prevent the fierce Caledonian tribes from invading the Roman colony of Britannia. When the Normans invaded in 1066, many Anglo-Saxon English settled in the Scottish Lowlands, after which Scotland began to adopt some English ways. Adopting a feudal system, Scotland began to grow and thrive.

In 1328 Edward III finally recognised Scotland's independence, after which James IV married the daughter of Henry VII of England, paving the way for the Stuart era of Scottish sovereignty in England. The old rivalry between the two nations finally ended in 1707 with an act of union forming the kingdom of Great Britain.

Many of the most famous faces of Scotland's amazing story have been commemorated in these intricately detailed pieces, with the characters and symbols as follows:

The King: King Robert The Bruce
The Queen: Mary Queen Of Scots
The Bishop: John Knox
The Knight: Sir William Wallace
The Rook: Scottish Tower House
The Pawn: Scottish Thistle
