How we create the very best Chess Sets
The process of making a chess board is very different to making chess pieces. For this reason there are specialist manufacturers who, in some cases, will make one, but not the other. We source the bulk of our boards from Rechapados Ferrer
We have combined these fine chess boards with chessmen from dedicated chess piece manufacturers and artisans to create some of the best chess sets available online. From our years of knowledge - and some trial and error - we can make the best match between board and pieces considering size, wood type, finish type (e.g. satin or gloss) and price.
Extensive Selection
We have twelve categories of chess set including Staunton, Lewis, themed, ornate and many more. We have arranged our huge selection of products in a way you can easily navigate to ensure you choose the right set for you.
The materials used in Chess Set production and how they affect affordability
Our range includes sets made from wood, metal, marble, alabaster, crushed stone and resin. Wood is by far the most popular material and the most cost effective to craft or manufacture into sets (both boards and pieces). The type of wood has a dramatic effect on the price of the set and will also determine and colour, weight and feel. You can learn more about the woods used on our woods guide page.

Chess Set Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
You have so many sets to choose from, where do I start?
Our sets are organised into categories depending on the style. Size and budget are two things you should consider initially. A set that is too large for your home won't be ideal. Also consider what the set will used for, serious chess playing or as an ornament. If you're looking to play serious games then it must be a traditional Staunton set. As an ornament, you can choose. To make things easier you can filter by size of chess board and chess pieces so you can narrow down your perfect set. We also have a small team of dedicated experts and we're happy to talk you through the process. Get in touch and we'll be happy to help.
Is Staunton a brand of chess set & can I get a Staunton style board?
There never was a company called Staunton that made chess sets. The set got the name from the chess player Howard Staunton who endorsed the set when he saw it and realised how good it was for playing chess with. There is no board that specifically accompanied the set so the term only refers to the pieces.
Why do some of your chess sets have four queens?
There is a rule in chess whereby when you get a pawn to the opposite end of the board, you can turn it into a queen. This is known as a promotion. It is therefore possible to have more than one queen on the board of your side at the same time. In the past players would sometimes improvise by turning a rook on its head but with the extra queens you can add a real queen to the board. You can find out more on our chess rules page.
