When buying a chess board, it's very important to buy the right size. There are two variables to consider, the first being the size of the chessmen you intend to use with the board and second being where you'll use or display the board. A good place to start is by using a tape measure to see what size you can accommodate. If you already have the chessmen, you must measure the base diameter of the king and pawns. Use our helpful chess size guide to select the perfect chess board for you.
We sell chess boards made using the following broad material types:

Boards made from metal or marble can, in certain circumstances be engraved. Wooden chess boards are best not engraved directly, and we recommend using a metal plaque which can be glued onto surround of the chess board. Most wooden chess boards are of veneer construction, and this can cause a problem when it comes to engraving.
There are two very different construction methods of chess board:
The veneer method involves a core of reconstituted wood, either ply or chipboard which is then covered on all six sides by veneers of real wood. These veneers are very thin (1mm or less). When done with precision this method creates a perfectly aligned and geometrically accurate chess board. This is the most stable method; the boards won't warp or crack. It is also the most sustainable method as the amount of hardwood used is less (due to the thickness of the veneers). This video shows part of the process of how veneer chess boards are made.
The solid wood method involves thick pieces of hardwood (between 5 and 10mm) glued together to make the construction. Each square will be a thick tile of wood. There will be a core in the middle of ply-wood but the vast bulk of the board will be the hardwood. This method is more expensive, uses more hardwood and can be prone to warps and cracks when the wood moves with temperature and humidity changes. These boards tend to look hand-made and each one will be different and unique. This video shows how a solid wood chess board is made.
