Staunton Chess Sets

What is a Staunton Chess Set?

The Staunton chess set is the standard design used in tournaments and recognized worldwide by chess players. This iconic style was first introduced in 1849 by Nathaniel Cooke and manufactured by the renowned games maker John Jaques of London. The set was named after the top chess player of the era, Howard Staunton, who endorsed and promoted the new design.

The Staunton pattern was created to address the need for a chess set with pieces that were easy to recognize and use. The design features a simple yet elegant appearance, with each piece having a distinct shape and size. For example, the king has a cross on top, the queen wears a coronet, and the bishop has a mitre-shaped head. These clear differences make the pieces easy to tell apart during play.

The Official Staunton Company

Many people believe there is an official company called "Staunton" that makes these chess sets, but this is not true. The term "Staunton" only refers to the specific style of chess pieces, not a brand or company. While the original sets were made by John Jaques, many other manufacturers now produce Staunton-style sets of varying quality and materials. Here at Regency Chess, we stock a vast variety of Staunton sets.

The Gold Standard

Despite the lack of a single official maker, the Staunton design remains the gold standard for chess sets. Its balanced proportions, weighted pieces, and clean lines have made it a favourite among both casual players and grandmasters for over 150 years. Today, you can find Staunton sets made from a variety of materials, including wood, plastic, and even metal, at a wide range of price points to suit any budget.

Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned player, a Staunton chess set is a timeless choice that combines function and elegance. With its rich history and enduring popularity, it's no wonder the Staunton pattern has become synonymous with the game of chess itself.

The Staunton chess set's journey from its inception to becoming the world's most recognizable chess set design is a testament to its craftsmanship and practicality. The set's widespread adoption in tournaments and clubs has solidified its position as the standard for serious play.

High-End Staunton Chess Sets

Collectors and enthusiasts also prize Staunton sets for their historical significance and aesthetic appeal. Many manufacturers offer luxury and vintage versions. Luxury sets mostly crafted from premium materials like ebony, rosewood, and boxwood, with intricate detailing on the knight pieces and vintage sets replicating the original designs from 1849.

The Staunton chess set is an iconic design that has stood the test of time. Its combination of elegance, functionality, and historical significance has made it the go-to choice for players of all skill levels and a beloved addition to any chess enthusiast's collection.
