The Russian pieces feature traditional costumes, from the burly King to the elegantly robed Queen and Cossack-styled bishop. The attention to detail is impeccable, from the chain mail worn by the pawns and knights to the miniature onion-domed dwellings of the rooks, evoking the architectural beauty of Russia. Each piece in the Mongolian army is adorned in traditional dress, with Genghis Khan being easily recognizable by his facial features, helmet, and flowing robes. The Queen exudes regal elegance in her costume, while the exquisite creativity of Italfama is showcased in the miniature ger (or yurt), the nomadic dwelling of the Mongolian people. Accompanied by a stunning 15.75 inch walnut and maple board, this is the ultimate chess set for those with a passion for historical events, both with or without the board.

The Mongol invasion of the Caucasus in 1221 and a portion of Russia in 1222 greatly accelerated their rule over the country. For nearly 250 years, Genghis Khan's trusted generals, Jebe and Subotai, led their troops through treacherous terrain and launched strategic attacks on Russian territory. Despite initial resistance, the Russian ruler Prince Mstislav eventually surrendered and was executed, along with his men. More battles and sieges followed, leading to the complete dominance of the Mongol army in 1242. Old Sarai was established as the epicenter of their control, known as the Golden Horde, which lasted for over two centuries. It wasn't until 1480, with the rise of the Muscovite state under Ivan III of Moscow, that Russia finally broke free from Mongol rule.
